Remembrance Service at Carterton (RAF Brize Norton)
REMEMBRANCE SERVICE AT CARTERTON WAR MEMORIAL
On Sunday 10th of November the club's wreath was placed on the war memorial alongside many others, with local dignitaries present including the Camp Commander of RAF Brize Norton. It was fantastic to see so many children at the ceremony. The club has participated in the Carterton Service for over 25 years, making a donation to the local branch of the Royal British Legion every year. In recent years we have also laid a wreath at the Burford War Memorial.

Another successful bridge drive
On Saturday, 9th of November, 2024, we held our annual charity bridge drive, organised and run by club members, at Broadwell village hall, near Stow-On-The-Wold. A full house of 70 players enjoyed several rounds of bridge with a break in the middle for a lovely lunch with wine. Thanks to all the players who came along to help raise funds for the Club's Charity Account. It was a great day!
Planting Crocuses - Polio Awareness
On Saturday 2nd Nov, we planted another 4000 purple crocuses on the verges of Burford Hill. This is our 5th year – 20,000 planted in total! In early spring we hope to see large patches of purple on the verges. The purple crocus is the emblem of Rotary’s World Polio Day (October 24th). Purple is used because that is the colour of ink used to mark a finger of each child receiving the polio vaccine. Rotary began vaccinating in 1989 in the Philippines with help later from WHO and The Gates Foundation. In Jan-Aug 2024, 14 cases of wild-type polio were report in the world, with cases recently being identified in Gaza.

World Polio Day (October 24th) - more purple crocuses for Burford
On Saturday, 28th of October, to mark the WHO World Polio Day, Club members planted 4000 purple crocuses on the grass verges of Burford High Street. The purple crocus is the emblem of the Rotary's End Polio Now campaign which started in 1985. Since 2018, we have planted 18,000 crocuses in the verges.
This is from Rotary's website:
"For over 35 years, Rotary and its members have been committed to fighting to eradicate polio across the world. The Purple4Polio activities suggested by Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland are to raise funds and awareness for End Polio Now, Rotary’s global campaign to eradicate polio across the world. When a child receives their life-saving polio drops on mass polio immunisation days, their little finger is painted with a purple dye so it is clear they have received their polio vaccine. Rotary’s pledge for a polio free world was made in 1985 when there were 125 polio endemic countries and hundreds of new cases every single day. In the past few years, only two countries have reported cases of polio caused by the wild poliovirus, but no child anywhere is safe until every child has been fully vaccinated. Thanks to Rotary, and the support of our partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, there are now just two countries still classed as endemic: Pakistan and Afghanistan. To finish the job over 2 billion doses of oral polio vaccine still have to be administered, to more than 400 million children in over 50 countries, each and every year. We have to have zero cases of polio and zero positive environmental samples before the world can finally be certified polio free."

Club Christmas Dinner and Charter Celebration 2021
We started celebrating Christmas early on the 3rd of December - to coincide with the anniversary of the charter of the original Kingham club. There were were two highlights of the evening - Val Clark received a Paul Harris Award from President Ros Richardson in recognition of all the fantastic charity work she has done over many years, and, specifially her support for the Rotary Club and her involvement behind the sceens. We are very grateful for the work she does as a friend of Rotary.
We were entertained by Club Member John Smith and his fellow cast of Mummers from Bampton. A traditional and ancient traditional play involving fight, death and resurrection by the "doctor." The money raised by the evening's raffle was donated to the Mummers for them to pass on to their chosen charity. Every Christmas, the play is performed in pubs and at parties in Bampton, a great tradition and one which provdes charitable help as well as excellent entertainment.
We would like to thank the staff of Burford Golf Club for providing an excellent venue and a friendly service. We all enjoyed ourselves thoroughly! President Ros gave the catering staff of the Golf Club a present from the members to thank them for the work they do for us every Monday evening.
Some images from the evening are shown below. For more information on the origin of Mummers, click here.

The club sponsored and planted purple crocuses in Burfords High Street verges to mark World Polio Day
Shown below are (rare?) images of men at work planting purple crocuses in the verges of The Hill, Burford on October 24th, World Polio Day. The purple crocus is the emblem of Rotary's Polio Eradication
Rotary International has been at the forefront of a global drive to eradicate polio from the world since 1988. During this time, more than $2billion has been contributed by Rotarians worldwide. At the end of the 1980s, more than 350,000 children were paralysed every year after contracting polio. Today, Rotary and partners have reduced the incidence of polio by 99.9% and it is now only present in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Nearly 19 million people who would otherwise have been paralysed are walking, and more than 1.5 million people are alive who would have otherwise died from the disease. At every immunisation event around the world, each child that is vaccinated has their little finger painted with a purple dye. Rotary has taken the purple crocus flower as a symbol of these immunisations.
Last year, to mark World Polio Day, the Rotary Club of Burford and Kingham planted 3,500 purple crocus flowers on the verges in Burford, with the permission of the town council. This year, 2021, we did the same again, planting another 3,500 further up The Hill. In late winter, early spring, we will be selling pots of crocuses (500 corms in total) to raise some money to support Polio vaccination. It is vital that vaccination continues until polio is erradicated. For every £1 raised towards this cause, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will donate another £2.
