Past President John Forster gave a cheque for £1,200 to Medical Detection Dogs. The donation was from the club's charity account and was made possible by the efforts of members and friends who helped at our events during the year John was president (2023-2024). This important charity trains dogs to detect the odour of human diseases allowing for faster, more efficient, less invasive diagnoses and improved patient outcomes. The Club has supported local charities for many years, including Bridewell Gardens. In December 2024, as an early Christmas present, we donated £500 to help with the fantastic work they do. Located at Wilcote, near Witney, the charity is a mental health recovery service providing social and therapeutic horticulture in a working garden to adults living in Oxfordshire.

On Saturday 2nd Nov, we planted another 4000 purple crocuses on the verges of Burford Hill. This is our 5th year of planting crocuses in Burford. The purple crocus is the emblem of Rotary’s World Polio Day (October 24th). Purple is used because that is the colour of ink used to mark a finger of each child receiving the polio vaccine. Rotary began vaccinating in 1989 in the Philippines with help later from WHO and The Gates Foundation. In Jan-Aug 2024, there have been 14 cases of wild-type polio in the world, with cases recently being identified in Gaza.
